Whiteout is an architecture of ice: a contemporary igloo enclosed by a transparent hose that contains water. It not only becomes a part of the winterscape, but also obscures sense of space perception within the structure. In order to construct it, we focus on the unusual site conditions, given that it will be built on the ice, rather than on the ground. The pavilion is raised by the local climate and natural resources of the site. The main materials of pavilion are water, the local climate, and a transparent hose.

One 400-meter-long wire-reinforced hose is wound into a spiral shape and filled with water that will become and remain frozen due to the ambient temperature. This procedure gives rigidity to the structure to help to maintain a balance between the expansion of the ice and the elasticity of the hose. Therefore, this cone-shape structure is stable enough to stand alone without its supporting wood frame after the water has frozen. The space of inside the spiral offers adequate room for skaters, skiers, and strollers to rest and contemplate. People can relax on the triangular platform and bench inside the spiral. When the temperature rises in the spring, the ice will change to water and drain into the Assiniboine River. The main material of the temporary pavilion will be returned to nature. Only the transparent hose of this temporary structure will remain for reuse next year. Whiteout connects the river, air, and people and completes a sustainable lifecycle.
