삼각학교는 사람, 교육 그리고 장소 사이의 관계 위에 놓여있다. 그들 사이의 상호작용은 표면적으로 건축의 복합성을 드러내지만 동시에 단순한 하나의 교차점을 만들기도 한다. 서울 근교 남양주에 위치한 이 고등학교 건물은 이러한 복합성과 단순함의 상호적 해석을 통해 이 시대의 새로운 교육시설의 가능성을 제안한다.

The Triangle School stages relationships between people, place and education. The interactions between the three elements reveal the complexity of the architecture. Yet, they simultaneously function to make a simple point of intersection. Located in Namyangju, adjacent to Seoul, this high school building explores new possibilities of the educational architecture through the dialectical interpretation of such complexity and simplicity.

삼각학교는 건물이 인접한 삼면의 다른 성격을 암시한다. 북측에 위치한 학교운동장, 동측의 뒷산 그리고 서측의 기존건물은 서로 다른 3가지 컨텍스트이다. 이러한 요소들은 삼각형의 건물배치와 함께 열리고, 닫히고, 절충된 각기 다른 세 입면을 이끌어낸다. 특히 건물의 정면은 투명한 스킨을 바탕으로 운동장으로부터의 적절한 조도와 시선차단을 위한 건축장치인 수직 루버에 의해 규정된다. 반면 프로그램이 전혀 다른 서측의 기존건물에 대응하는 방식은 폐쇄성(닫힘)이다. 이 기존 건물은 운영시스템이 다른 중학교 시설로서 삼각학교와는 기능적으로 분리되어야 하는 건축적 요구를 가진다. 이에 닫힌 콘크리트 벽을 기본으로 3개층을 관통하는 하나의 삼각형 창을 통해 상호간섭을 최소화하며 건축공간의 기하학을 암시하고 있다.

The Triangle School implies the different characteristics of its three bordering sides. The playground to the north, the hill to the east, and the existing building to the west are three different surroundings. These factors lead to three different elevations - opened, closed, and compromised - which are arranged within the layout of the triangular building. The façade of the building with a transparent skin is defined by vertical louvers, an architectural device that maintains an appropriate balance between illumination and privacy. On the contrary, closedness is the way of responding to the existing building to the west which has different programs. It is a middle school building with a wholly separate operational system. Thus, this existing structure needs to be functionally distinct from the Triangle School. For this, based on the closed concrete wall, one single triangle-shaped window minimizes mutual interference, implying the geometry of internal space.

삼면이 다른 외부의 복합적인 성격과는 달리 내부는 안을 향해 동일하게 열려있다. 교실이 위치한 2, 3층에는 하늘을 향한 중정이 위치한다. 중정을 구획하는 투명한 내부 삼각형은 건물의 외부 삼각형과 그 각도가 서로 어긋나 있다. 이 어긋남은 층간의 수직적인 틈을 만들어 각층을 하나의 공간으로 연결시키며 어느 위치에서든 열린 시야를 확보하게 한다. 또한 건물의 중심부에 위치한 이 외부공간은 일정한 조도의 학습환경을 만들며 빛과 바람을 만날 수 있는 작은 정원으로서 기능한다. 이 중정을 매개로 조직된 삼각형 건물은 유동적이며 유희적인 사회적 공간으로서 열린 대화를 가능하게 하는 매개체가 될 것이다.

Unlike the complex characteristics of the exterior with three different sides, the interior opens uniformly into the center of the building. On the second and third floors, which have classrooms, is a courtyard looking up at the sky. The transparent internal triangle that divides the courtyard is placed in different angles to the exterior triangle. This discordance creates vertical gaps between floors that connect them into a single space to provide an open view from any spot. This external space located in the center of the building creates a learning environment with a certain level of illumination and functions as a small courtyard with sunlight and wind. The triangular building will become a medium that enables open conversation as a flexible and playful social space.
