NAMELESS Doors: Boundaries of Communication, Arumjigi Foundation, 2014
NAMELESS Doors: Boundaries of Communication, Arumjigi Foundation, 2014, A door implies a place beyond it. In addition to its functionality such as opening and closing, and safety and privacy, the door means a flexible and changing boundary that defines place. The nature of a traditional Korean door with a lattice set in the door frame, in particular, is quite gentle. The thin but durable lattice becomes one with changhoji (traditional Koran paper pasted on doors and windows) inside. Due to the semi-transparency unique to changhoji, door properly accommodates the inside and outside, rather than separating them. The look of a worn-out door loosened by many hands enables communication between the inside and outside in a relaxed mood.

EPS Grotto uses material, form and place to investigate re-interpretation.
EPS Grotto uses material, form and place to investigate re-interpretation. The structure is composed of EPS Blocks frequently used in architecture and civil engineering. Man’s oldest tool, the hand was used to transform the refined square EPS blocks on site into rough and uneven natural surfaces evocative of eroded rocks. This symbolized human action transforming standardized and artificial materials into the arbitrary. Its transformed materiality allows the space to flow naturally within an intended structural frame, allowing visitors to experience and explore a small grotto within the city center. Moreover, the fluid surfaces and texturized space within impels visitors to actively touch, lean and bump into the structure, reinventing the action of‘play’.

PLAYCLOUD is an architecture of air. This project explores the narrative potential of a pneumatic and fabric structure. We not only look at the utopian implications of the pavilion, but also seek a practical and sustainable solution to construct. The inflatable frame is a stand-in for temporariness, playfulness, lightness, and the transitory. It lets us ask two questions, “How in control are we of this structure, these narratives to be set up as temporary construction?” and, “Why is vision so central to the pavilion?”
